Restaurant chains across the U.S. have been pruning weaker brands as operators respond to higher labor, food and occupancy costs. In Florida, that retrenchment has hit Bahama Breeze, the Caribbean-themed chain based in Orlando. Darden Restaurants announced in February that the brand would be dismantled, with a shrinking group of Florida outposts left operating only until they are converted.
Darden confirmed the phaseout of Bahama Breeze on February 3
Darden Restaurants said on February 3, 2026 that it had completed its review of strategic alternatives for Bahama Breeze and would permanently close 14 of the chain’s 28 restaurants. In the same announcement, the company said the remaining 14 locations would be converted into other Darden brands over the next 12 to 18 months. The company stated that the 14 restaurants marked for permanent closure were expected to keep operating through April 5, 2026.
That announcement established the verified scale of the change: Bahama Breeze, once a national casual-dining brand in Darden’s portfolio, is being wound down rather than sold or revived as a standalone concept. Darden said at the time that it was not disclosing which sister brands would replace each restaurant. The company also said the moves were not expected to have a material impact on its financial results.
A later Darden annual filing gave a more precise timeline. In that filing, the company said the February decision led to the closure of roughly half the remaining Bahama Breeze system and that those closures were completed on or about April 5, 2026. It also reiterated that the surviving restaurants were expected to be converted by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027, confirming that customers should view the current locations as temporary holdovers rather than permanent survivors.
Florida has the biggest share of the remaining restaurants, but the count is changing
Florida was hit harder than any other state because it had the largest concentration of Bahama Breeze restaurants when Darden made its decision. The company’s February list showed five Florida locations set for permanent closure: Miami, Jacksonville, Kissimmee on West Osceola Parkway, Pembroke Pines and Sanford. It also identified 10 Florida locations slated for conversion rather than immediate closure: Altamonte Springs, Brandon, Fort Myers, one Kissimmee site on Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, Lutz, four Orlando-area restaurants and Tampa.
That made Florida the state with 10 of the 14 conversion locations disclosed by Darden. CBS Miami, citing the company release, separately confirmed those same Florida closures and conversions and noted that the two South Florida restaurants in Miami and Pembroke Pines were among the sites not chosen for conversion. What remains less clear is the full city-by-city timing for each Florida transition, because Darden initially withheld the replacement brand for every address.
By late August, that remaining Florida count had already started to shrink. USA TODAY reported on August 27 that only 11 Bahama Breeze restaurants remained operating nationwide, including six in Florida: Orlando’s Grand National Drive site, Altamonte Springs, Lutz, an Orlando Lake Buena Vista area site, Tampa and Fort Myers. That means some Florida conversion sites identified in February have already closed or changed branding, while others are still serving customers on a temporary basis.
The phaseout reflects Darden’s strategy and broader restaurant pressures
Darden tied the decision directly to strategy rather than a single public safety issue, lease problem or one-day restructuring. In its February announcement, the company said Bahama Breeze and its 28 locations were “no longer a strategic priority,” language it had first used when it began reviewing options for the brand. The company said it believed the conversion sites were strong real estate that could better serve other concepts in its portfolio.
Darden’s filings and earnings materials added broader context. The company said all Bahama Breeze locations were expected to be closed or converted between the third quarter of fiscal 2026 and the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027, and executives told investors the conversions would be folded into a wider restaurant growth plan. Those same materials also flagged industry pressures including cost pressures, labor costs, insurance costs, competition, changing consumer preferences and the challenge of driving profitable sales growth.
For Florida diners, the practical takeaway is straightforward. Bahama Breeze has not been preserved as a continuing chain in its home state; the remaining restaurants are part of a timed wind-down. As of late August, several Florida locations were still open, but Darden and follow-up reporting indicate those sites are scheduled to close temporarily and reopen under other Darden brands on a rolling basis through 2027.
