I am completely obsessed with Americas Test Kitchens newest book Boards: Stylish Spreads for Casual Gatherings, with Food Styling and Expert Advice from Elle Simone Scott.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a charcuterie lover.  It’s not only my favorite way to eat, but also one of my favorite ways to entertain. Turning an Old Cupboard Into a Pantry

A pantry is a great addition to any kitchen. It saves you space in your kitchen cupboards, makes it easier to access all of your ingredients, and keeping it well stocked means that you will likely save money on your food shopping too. This is because you’ll be able to whip up tasty, healthy and thrifty meals when you’re low on fresh ingredients. But how do you go about turning a regular dusty old cupboard into a pantry? Read on to find out. 

 

Clear it out

First things first, clear out the entire space. Remove all clutter and rubbish, give everything a good vacuum and disinfect it. Since you’ll be storing food items in here it makes sense for the area to be as clean as possible- even if everything is sealed. Be sure to get right into the corners, keep an eye out for any pest activity and treat the area if you spot anything. 

 

Make any repairs

Speaking of pests, making any repairs to the pantry area can prevent infestations. Seal up any cracks, gaps or holes with filler or builders caulk. If you’re renovating a pantry in a house that’s in need of refurbishment, you might need to make bigger repairs such as replacing the door or ceiling repair if there’s been any previous flooding or issues. If you want to make everything look its best, smooth down all of the walls and make sure the lighting is working well. Pantry cupboards tend to be dark and a little dingy since they receive very little natural light, so a good light to see what you’re looking for is essential. 

 

Paint it 

Painting the inside of the cupboard will make it look more aesthetically pleasing, and it can also be functional too. If you opt for an anti mould and wipeable paint it will help you to keep the area clean and looking nice for longer. Go with a light colour which will brighten up the space and help you spot any pest activity or mould you can act on it as quickly as possible. 

 

Add shelving 

Adding the right shelving to the pantry will maximise the space. Some shelves will need to be taller, and others smaller so plan out the gaps you want to leave in between each. Consider the different storage jars you have, if you purchase these first you can work out exactly what kinds of sizes you’ll need for the shelving. Other shelving units could include a wall mounted spice rack, this will keep all of the smaller jars together and make them easier to find. 

 

Organise and label

Decanting all of your ingredients into sturdy glass or plastic containers is worthwhile. You’ll keep out pests and keep things fresher for longer. But if you do this, don’t forget to label the new container. There’s no way of being able to tell the difference between plain and self raising flour for example once they’re out of their packs- and if you mix them up in a recipe it might completely fail! It’s worth putting the use by date on the label as well, pantry items do tend to have a long shelf life but they won’t last forever. So you need to know when they need to be replaced or used by later down the line.

Disney+ has released a new trailer and key art for Marvel Studios’ “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” Streaming exclusively on Disney+ beginning August 17, the new comedy series stars Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who specializes in superhuman-oriented legal cases.

Executive producer Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and chief creative officer of Marvel, welcomed Tatiana Maslany to The Walt Disney Company’s 2022 Upfront presentation this afternoon at Basketball City on Pier 36 in New York. The pair shared details about the upcoming series, including the August 17 launch date, and debuted the new trailer for attendees.

Directed by Kat Coiro (Episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9) and Anu Valia (Episodes 5, 6, 7) with Jessica Gao as head writer, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” follows Jennifer Walters as she navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. The nine-episode series welcomes a host of MCU vets, including Mark Ruffalo as Smart Hulk, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/the Abomination, and Benedict Wong as Wong. Simple Ways To Update Your Kitchen

Have you got an old kitchen on your hands? Maybe it’s been over a decade since you last did some renovation work? And maybe you’re getting sick and tired of looking at the same tired cupboards and countertops? Well we’ve got some good news for you! You can make some simple changes to your kitchen, which is in sore need of a facelift, and give it a chic updated look that’s all the rage nowadays. Check out the ideas below for ways to get started.

Switch Out Your Lighting

 

The way your kitchen is currently lit has a lot to do with the way you see it. Overhead lighting is great for illumination, but it doesn’t look all that good and can even hurt your eyes. If you want to give your kitchen a more modern or artsy look, using standing and table lamps can make the room feel more intimate. This is also a great option for hosting dinner parties in the near future; you even just need to stick some candles around in a pinch! 

 

Lay a New Floor

 

Laying out a new floor is the most expensive option on this list, but if you’re going to change the kitchen entirely as time goes on, why not start from the ground up and get the hard work out of the way? And you could even forego the other ideas here if you just change the floor entirely to something more modern. Companies like Texas Floors would usually recommend hardwood or laminate for the most impact here. Both easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing in one! 

 

Get Stick-on Countertops

 

If you don’t have the budget to change the counters, because you spent all that money ripping up the floor, you can simply stick on new countertops without much fuss. It’s a little trick many tenants have used over the years to make apartments feel more like their own home; if you can simply rub on a fresh marbled appearance you don’t have to actually buy a whole new kitchen unit! You can find these adhesive sheets in most DIY stores or online, so it won’t even be hard to find a look you like. 

 

Invest in New Appliances

 

An old dishwasher can be washed out and faded, and even be yellowing in certain areas. It’s the same for washing machines and tumble dryers too – the older an appliance is, the worse it looks, and the worse it tends to run too. So if you really want to upgrade your kitchen to a more contemporary style, this is one of the best places to focus on. New appliances also have a lot more features to depend on, and they’re usually wifi enabled, meaning you can control them from the comfort of the sofa in the living room! 

 

Updating your kitchen doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. You can use simple ideas like those above to make the room feel brand new and unique to you.

Surviving a Blackout at Home

Most of us are pretty lucky in the USA in 2022 that blackouts are not such a common problem anymore. However, they can and do still happen from time to time, whether due to storm damage, faulty wiring, or an issue with the power company.

 

That’s why it is never a bad idea to have a plan of what you will do to survive a blackout in your home should you ever need to. By having a plan in advance, you will not need to panic, and you can keep your family safe and happy until the lights (and everything else) comes back on again.

 

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some tips for surviving a blackout at home:

 

Be prepared

 

It will be easier to get through a blackout if you have prepared in advance with supplies like candles, matches, torches, batteries, and maybe some backup propane for fuel. And of course, a generator. Having some physical books and board games or crafting materials to keep you entertained is a pretty useful idea too.

 

Get used to unplugging things

 

If a power surge happens and the power goes out, anything that is plugged in could be affected by the surge and stop working completely, even when the power comes back on, which is why it is a good idea to unplug things when not in use all of the time, but especially immediately after a surge has occurred (leave one bulb on so you will know when the power comes back on). You might also want to fit surge protestors to your sockets, to help save your electronics should a power surge occur.

 

Install a carbon monoxide detector

 

When the power goes out, you might switch to using other forms of power like a generator or grill. If so, you should not let these run inside your home due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, but it is also a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector just in case. Carbon monoxide can make you sick and even kill you very quickly, so it is always better to be safe than sorry.

 

Fill up the tub

 

It is not always the case, but quite often, you will find that, when the power goes out, the water source will stop functioning soon after due to problems with the municipal supply. By filling up the tub, and any other containers you can find, as soon as this happens, you can ensure that you have access to fresh water when you need it. It might be a good idea to boil it before consuming first if it is not usually a drinkable source though.

 

Use the car to charge

 

If you desperately need your phone to contact family or your laptop to work, for example, then charge it while you’re running your car. A cigarette lighter attachment will work in most cars for most devices so you don’t have to go without your tech for too long.

 

Surviving a blackout is not so tough when you are ready for it and you stay calm!
