One Beloved Mexican Fast-Casual Franchisee Just Filed, and 16 Locations Are Now in Question

Moe's Southwest Grill

Moe’s Southwest Grill customers in parts of the Southeast could see fewer places to order burritos, bowls, and tacos after one of the chain’s largest franchisees filed for bankruptcy. Quality Fresca I, LLC, a Palm Beach, Florida-based operator, filed for Chapter 11 protection on August 4, 2026, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida and is seeking to reject leases at 16 restaurants.

The filing does not put Moe’s Southwest Grill or its parent company, GoTo Foods, into bankruptcy. Still, for households that rely on quick restaurant meals during workweeks, school nights, or travel, the case could mean fewer convenient stops in several local markets.

The filing puts 16 restaurant leases in play

Quality Fresca entered Chapter 11 while operating 38 Moe’s restaurants across Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., according to court-based reports cited by Fast Company and Restaurant Dive. Fast Company reported that the company is seeking to end leases at 16 locations, and if those closures are approved, the operator would be left with 22 stores.

The bankruptcy petition was filed on August 4, 2026, and Fast Company reported that court documents list August 4 as the effective date of lease rejection for every location named in the filing. Several of those restaurants appear to have already stopped serving customers. Fast Company reported that some had dropped off Moe’s website, and at least 10 were marked permanently closed on Google at the time of its reporting.

GoTo Foods said the case involves an independently operated franchisee, not the brand itself. In a statement published by Nation’s Restaurant News, the parent company said the status of individual locations may vary as the process unfolds, though it currently expects most locations to remain open.

Florida accounts for most of the locations at issue

Fast Company identified 14 Florida restaurants, one Virginia restaurant, and one Georgia restaurant on the lease rejection list. The Virginia site is in Alexandria, and the Georgia site is in Brunswick. Florida locations listed by Fast Company include stores in Tallahassee, Clearwater, Jacksonville, Land O’ Lakes, Tampa, Odessa, North Port, Naples, University Park, Gainesville, Fort Myers, and Palm Harbor.

That city list matters more to diners than the bankruptcy docket alone. A closure in a large state does not affect every customer equally, but it can reduce options quickly in neighborhoods where families have only a few fast-casual choices nearby. In this case, the heaviest impact appears concentrated in Florida, where nearly all of the locations named for lease rejection are located.

Not every affected restaurant’s operating status is fully clear. GoTo Foods said location status may vary, and the company has not released a broader public list beyond the sites identified in reporting on the court filings. The filing also does not mean all Moe’s restaurants are at risk. Fast Company said Moe’s had roughly 541 U.S. locations according to its store locator, while Nation’s Restaurant News reported 568 locations at the end of 2025 using Technomic data.

Rising costs, weaker traffic, and earlier closures set up the case

Court filings cited by Fast Company and Restaurant Dive say Quality Fresca’s finances were hurt by industry headwinds, increased costs, and declining revenue. The reported pressures included reduced customer traffic, higher food and shipping costs, decreased labor availability, and inflation. Restaurant Dive also said declining foot traffic tied to and following the COVID-19 period was not matched by lower rent obligations.

The company had been shrinking for years before filing. Restaurant Dive reported that Quality Fresca bought 67 Moe’s restaurants in 2020 and added to that total in 2021, reaching 69 stores. From May 2021 through December 2025, Nation’s Restaurant News said the operator closed 19 underperforming stores, then closed another 12 in 2026 before the bankruptcy filing, bringing the count to 38.

For households, the immediate takeaway is local rather than national. Moe’s as a brand continues to operate, but some communities may lose nearby stores as the bankruptcy process moves ahead. Quality Fresca said it aims to reorganize around viable restaurants or pursue a sale, while continuing operations through Chapter 11. For now, the confirmed number at issue is 16 leases, with Florida carrying most of the uncertainty.
