After 57 Years, a Longtime California Grocery Store Is Locking Its Doors for Good

Safeway plans to close its longtime supermarket at 6150 Bollinger Road in San Jose on or around November 13, 2026. The store has served the area for 57 years, according to SFGATE, making the change a notable one for shoppers near the Cupertino border.

What is closing in San Jose

The store slated to shut down is inside Orchard Farms Shopping Center in West San Jose. SFGATE reported that Safeway confirmed the Bollinger Road location will close on or around November 13, 2026, ending a run that stretches back nearly six decades.

KRON4 also reported that Safeway confirmed the closure and said workers at the store will keep their jobs. According to that reporting, employees are expected to be reassigned to other nearby Safeway stores rather than laid off.

For shoppers, the immediate effect is a smaller choice of grocery stops in that part of San Jose. The Bollinger Road store has been a regular option for neighborhood staples, produce, pantry items, and bakery goods, and its closure leaves Orchard Farms Shopping Center without its anchor grocery tenant.

Safeway has not publicly given a specific reason for the San Jose store closure in the reporting reviewed for this article. Because the company has not released further detail, there is no confirmed public explanation beyond the closure date and reassignment plan.

What shoppers can expect next

Customers in the area will still have other Safeway stores nearby. KRON4 reported that one location at 5146 Stevens Creek Boulevard is less than a mile from the Bollinger Road store, and another nearby store serves shoppers along Saratoga Sunnyvale Road.

That means many customers may still be able to shop within the same chain without a major change to their usual grocery list. Even so, a neighborhood store closing can affect convenience, travel time, and how shoppers handle quick trips for weeknight meals or last minute ingredients.

The property itself is also moving into a new phase. Reporting cited in the NewsBreak reference says the San Jose supermarket space totals about 35,578 square feet and is being marketed for lease beginning January 1, 2027.

For home cooks who rely on a familiar layout or prepared foods counter, the practical adjustment will likely come down to mapping out another closest store before the November shutdown date. Safeway has not publicly announced any special transition details for customers at this location.

Another Safeway food facility is also set to close

The San Jose supermarket closure comes alongside a separate Safeway shutdown in Richmond. SFGATE and Richmond Standard reported that Safeway’s bread manufacturing plant at 905 South 34th Street in Richmond is scheduled to close in late December 2026.

According to the state WARN notice cited by those reports, 92 employees are affected at the Richmond plant. Coverage of the filing says the notice was dated October 20, 2026, and lists December 20, 2026, as the effective date when layoffs can begin. Richmond Standard reported that the plant is expected to close on December 30, 2026.

That Richmond facility has operated since 1965 and produced bakery items for Safeway stores in Northern California, according to local reporting and company materials. Albertsons Companies, Safeway’s parent company, told reporters that a limited number of affected bakery workers would be offered other positions.

Taken together, the two closures show continuing changes in Safeway’s Bay Area operations. For shoppers in San Jose, the confirmed takeaway is more immediate: the Bollinger Road supermarket is expected to stop serving customers on or around November 13, 2026.
