Why More Couples Are Turning to a Grocery Store for Their Wedding Cake

Wedding cakes are getting a more practical look in 2026. As overall wedding costs remain high, some couples are skipping specialty bakeries and turning instead to grocery store bakeries or warehouse clubs for the cake that feeds the room.

That shift is showing up in wedding budgeting advice, retailer bakery offerings, and recent reporting on couples using supermarket cakes to trim one of the reception’s more flexible costs.

Why grocery store cakes are getting a wedding moment

NPR reported on October 21, 2026 that some couples are buying cakes from the grocery store baking aisle to save money as wedding spending rises. That framing matches broader wedding cost data from The Knot, which says the average wedding cost is $34,200 in its 2026 Real Weddings Study, based on responses from 10,474 U.S. couples married between January 1 and December 31, 2025.

Cake is only one line on that budget, but it adds up quickly. The Knot says the average cost of a wedding cake is $540, with a lower cost quartile of $300, a median cost quartile of $480, and an upper cost quartile of $840. The same guide notes that guest count is a major driver, since more servings generally mean a larger or more elaborate cake.

That helps explain why couples are looking for shortcuts that do not feel like compromises. The Knot also says 72% of couples who serve cake are doing it at least partly for the cake-cutting tradition. In practice, that opens the door to one small display cake for photos and a less expensive sheet cake or backup cake for guests.

The broader budget math matters too. The Knot says catering, cake, and drinks account for 24% of the average wedding budget. When couples are trying to protect spending on the venue or guest experience, dessert becomes a place where a simpler purchase can make sense.

What grocery stores and warehouse clubs actually offer

Some chains openly market wedding cake services. Publix says its bakery offers wedding and special occasion cakes, includes a complimentary cake tasting as part of its wedding cake consultation service, and can transfer an order to another Publix Bakery for a destination wedding. That makes it more like a traditional wedding vendor than many shoppers may expect from a supermarket bakery.

Whole Foods Market also promotes custom cake ordering through its bakery department. The company tells shoppers to contact a Bakery team member at their local store to learn about available cake options, customization, and how to place an order. That does not make it a wedding specialist, but it does give couples another mainstream grocery option.

Warehouse clubs are part of the conversation too, even when they are not explicitly selling a “wedding cake.” Costco’s same-day custom cake page lists a rose custom half-sheet cake at $31.77, and Costco’s customer service FAQ confirms custom cake ordering is available in the Costco app. Costco’s official custom cake setup is still relatively simple compared with a bespoke wedding bakery, but low price and predictable sizing are part of the draw.

That difference in service level is the tradeoff. Grocery and warehouse cakes can be easier on the budget, but couples may see fewer flavor, finish, and design options than they would with a specialty cake studio.

What this means for couples planning now

For many couples, the real shift is not abandoning tradition. It is separating the symbolic cake from the serving cake. The Knot explicitly recommends less-expensive sheet cakes as a way to supplement a cutting cake and save money, especially for larger guest lists.

That strategy works because many guests care more about getting a good slice of cake than where it was ordered. If the ceremonial moment is covered by a smaller decorated cake, the rest of the dessert service can be handled more efficiently with sheet cakes kept in the back until serving time.

It also reflects a broader wedding planning reality in late 2026. Couples are making sharper choices about where to spend and where to scale back, and cake is a category where the savings can be meaningful without changing the overall feel of the reception. Grocery stores fit that need because they already know how to make consistent cakes for large gatherings.

The main planning question is less about prestige and more about logistics. Couples need to ask what the store can customize, how much notice it needs, whether delivery is available, and whether the cake style matches the look they want. For shoppers willing to trade some customization for convenience and lower cost, the grocery store bakery is becoming a serious wedding option.
