Use plants to repel mosquitoes
There are actually ways to repel mosquitoes using different plants. These act as a way to deter mosquitoes due to their scents. It’s an effective form of mosquito control and many of these plants can be placed inside the home or around entry points so that mosquitoes are less likely to enter your home. Here are some of the most common mosquito-repelling plants:
- Garlic
- Lavender
- Basil
- Lemon thyme
- Lemon verbena
- Rosemary
- Mint
- Eucalyptus
- Marigolds
Place a few of these in pots around your home and you’ll notice a drastic drop in mosquito numbers.
Try using some essential oils
Since the smell of some plants can keep mosquitoes away, the theory is that essential oils can also do the same thing. These oils aren’t as effective as other pest control products and they might not work as well as the plant itself. However, it’s very easy to prepare and has therapeutic effects that you can take advantage of.
Try essential oils in a diffuser or place drops around the entry points to your home. You should use oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, clove, and peppermint. You can also mix it into a spray bottle with water, shake it up, and then spray it on areas around your home. You only need a couple of drops in a large spray bottle.
Stop mosquitoes from entering your home
Mosquitoes are a common garden pest that usually enters your home through little cracks and openings, doors, or even windows that are left open. Since it’s summer, many people open their windows to let a breeze in and they may even leave their garden or patio door wide open as well. It’s important that you install a screen or net if you plan to do this as it stops the majority of mosquitoes from entering your home. It can also help you stop other pests if you’re concerned about them entering your home.
You generally only need to bring out the net once the sun goes down. Sunlight stops most mosquitoes and they’re usually most active in the evening.
Turn on your fans
This might sound strange, but mosquitoes actually have a hard time dealing with the wind. They’re so small and fragile that they tend to get blown away fairly strongly whenever there’s a breeze.
Since it’s summer anyway, you’ll probably have some fans turned on to help cool you down and regulate the temperature of the room. Keep these on for longer and you’ll see mosquitoes scatter around because they can’t handle the breeze.
